Description

Hi, my name is Igloo and I am a giant Aldabra tortoise. I can be identified by my large, round, grey shell, which is how I got my name! This is not the only way to identify me. I have a big personality to match my big shell. I love cuddles and scratched, especially under my shell in my hard to reach places.
I love spending my days cooling of in my pond and eating delicious grass and vegetables, although I prefer fruit. My all-time favourite food is hibiscus flowers! I’m a growing boy, so I eat a lot. I weigh 180 kilograms, but when I am done growing, I will weigh up to 300 kilograms. Crikey! Maybe that is why I move so slow?
I share my home with another male tortoise, named Jarvis, and when we aren’t in the pond together, we sunbake together. I am ectothermic, which means I get my energy from the sun. My big grey shell acts like a giant solar panel! Luckily, I live here on the Sunshine Coast where it’s warm and sunny all year round.
I am here at Australia Zoo because I am an ambassador for my wild cousins. Aldabra tortoises were hunted to the brink of extinction in the 1800s. Now, my wild friends are a protected species. You beauty!

Most of the inclusions in your adoption pack are online, meaning that your adoption is not only helping one of our animals, but the environment too!
All animal adoptions are a single payment and last for 12 months from the date of purchase. You can choose to renew your adoption after this time and continue your support of our animals and wildlife conservation efforts.

Age, group size and animal restrictions apply; animal encounters are subject to the usual encounter terms and conditions for each animal. Due to health and safety restrictions, saltwater crocodiles are not available for guest encounters; another animal/species will be substituted.
Please note: While all of the animals available for adoption are usually on display at the Zoo and/or participate in encounters, adopting an animal does not guarantee the chance of seeing or meeting them if visiting the Zoo. Animal availability is subject to change; there may be times when animals may be temporarily off display due to unforeseen circumstances, such as veterinary check-ups or enclosure maintenance. If booking one of our amazing animal encounters to meet your adoptee, please advise staff of the animal you adopt at the time of booking.
